JH track had a good afternoon @ Cambridge. They finish their season next Monday, May 12 at the SV Invite starting at 1:00 pm. Come on out and watch our squad compete at their final meet.
Mrs. Roskop has been teaching for 22 years. This year she is teaching 1st grade at SV, but has taught various grade levels and content areas. She is also the Head JH track coach, oversees Teammates, and is on the school improvement committee.
Mr. Huerta is the high school Spanish, weights, and shop teacher at Southern Valley and has been teaching for 11 years. Before he started teaching at Southern Valley, he was a deputy sheriff in Furnas County. He was inspired to start teaching because of coaching and working at the Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center with juveniles who had been put through the system. He had a lot to do with their education, schooling, coaching, helping them problem-solve and get assignments done. He makes learning Spanish fun and interesting for the students by incorporating a lot of hands-on learning like projects. He chooses projects that peak students’ interest focusing on what they want to learn and balances that with what they need to learn. His favorite part about teaching is being able to work with students and being able to teach them about life skills for outside of the classroom. Mr. Huerta has three children attending SV.

Mrs. Steph Holste is the special educationv teacher at Southern Valley HS. Along with being the special education teacher, she also helps with student council. She has been teaching here for 19 years. She enjoys it when she can work in a smaller group setting rather than a larger one. Both of her own kids have graduated from Southern Valley HS.
The Southern Valley chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 8 new members at a ceremony on Monday night. Congrats to all eight students for their excellent work not only in the classroom, but in their outstanding character, leadership & service.
Last night Southern Valley High School held their annual 7-12 Academic Awards night where students were recognized for not only their scholastic achievements, but also were recognized for their outstanding performances in many different extracurricular activities.
Mr. Jeremy Epp teaches geography, world history, American history, and American government to high school students at Southern Valley. He is also the head coach of the SV Golf Team, a position he has held for over 21 years. Mr. Epp grew up and went to high school in the rural community of Arthur, Nebraska, and says he has always loved small towns. He then attended Chadron State College where he earned his degree in education while playing on the basketball team there. Mr. Epp says he loves teaching and coaching because he likes to watch kids grow and achieve their goals. He currently lives in Alma with his wife, Tammy, and their four children.
Mrs. Ruskamp has been teaching first grade for two years. She has served Southern Valley for 7 years. In that time, she has held positions as a part-time sub, a full-time sub, and a para. Her favorite part of teaching is seeing the joy on the kid's faces when they get a new concept. Mrs. Ruskamp teaches 1st-grade subjects, which include Math, Reading, Social Studies, and Science. Mrs. Ruskamp is married to Matthew Ruskamp. The couple has four kids who attend/attended Southern Valley: Jeramyah, Jazmynn, Kasten, and Kinze. Ruskamp graduated SV in 2001 and was in SV’s first class which started in 7th grade and went all the way through JH/SH at SV.
Ms. Haley Reed is in her second year teaching at Southern Valley. She is the 2nd grade teacher and also coaches high school track. Ms. Reed had many role models during her senior year of high school who inspired her to become an elementary teacher. She does many fun activities with her students throughout the year, but what they do on the 100th day of school is one of her favorites. During this activity, 100 students lay on the ground to see how long they would be. Ms. Reed and her students always try to keep a positive environment within the classroom. One way they do that is always to tell each other “good job” and try to help each other through mistakes. Her favorite part of her day is reading time because she gets to see all of her students. Ms. Reed is also the HS pole vault coach. Her favorite memory from this last season was that all her vaulters got PRs or SRs during the season.

THANK YOU for making the Southern Valley Elementary Library Scholastic Book Fair a success! We earned lots of new books for both the elementary and the high school libraries! We were also able to stockpile new prizes for reading rewards. We could not have done it without your support.
Unfortunately due to weather forecast we are going to postpone our Elementary Field Day to Friday, May 16, 2025. We hope you can all still make it out to watch your students compete!

Here we go. Graduation week is finally upon us!! We kick off this week with Brynn Baily in our Senior series. Please join us in congratulating Brynn and wishing her the best of luck. Way to go Brynn!!!
Mrs. Ali Hosier is the High School Volleyball coach and the assistant Junior High volleyball and basketball coach. Coaching has always meant a lot to her growing up because sports helped develop her as a person and not just as an athlete. Mrs. Hosier loves having a passion and being able to share that passion with players while teaching them about work ethics. She is also the elementary PE teacher. Her favorite part is being able to work with little kids and seeing them walk in every day with smiles on their faces. “I just love the organized chaos that comes with teaching PE,” she said. Hosier was inspired to be a teacher when she moved to Colorado. She was the new kid and very nervous, and her Middle School PE teacher made her feel at home. She wants to be that person for other people. Mrs. Hosier is married to Charles Hosier and has two daughters, Scarlett and Hunter with another baby on the way.
